We have visited the USA several times and this time we were there for the 2017 total solar eclipse. Always looking for that trip on a budget, this trip was no exception. We had priced up a campervan so that we could tour for 4 weeks incorporating Wyoming to see the eclipse, however the prices we were quoted were astronomical so we opted for the best workaround possible. Instead of a campervan we hired a Dodge Grand Caravan which is a 7 seater people carrier, but the great difference with these vehicles is that the seats in the back fold away completely flat in the rear giving you a large enough space for a double size inflatable bed. Our first stop was to a Walmart store to buy a few essential items, the inflatable bed, sleeping bags and pillows, a camping stove and gas, cups, plates, utensils and enough food to get us going. We used the van a bit like a wicked campers campervan really, basic, but perfectly adequate and saving thousands of dollars in the process. Every three or four days we stopped in a motel so that we could have a shower, charge up all our batteries and use a proper bed. Most nights we stopped in woodland, the odd beach carpark and a few times in a quiet residential street. In between the motels we used restaurant rest rooms where you could lock yourself in and get a proper wash for free in private. But it worked, we travelled over 6000 miles and visited some amazing places. Take a look through some of these place with us.
